If the demolition is really slated it is simply CRIMINAL! That home is still beautiful and looks as sturdy as it was new. And, I imagine it has a great history. How very, very sad. It breaks my heart.

The building was never a residence, it was originally the offices of the "Brooklyn Improvement Company" a private firm established in the 1860s by the largest landholder in Gowanus, Edwin Litchfield, to transform the area from the tidal marsh that it was into the form of the Gowanus Canal that we know today. The building was probably built in the 1870s, the BPL has a photo from 1876 showing the structure. It is pretty old and has historical value, though it's architecturally oddly proportioned and seems cheaply made for the time. Might be landmarkable.
